Divine Mythologies

Company:
Sokolow Theatre/Dance Ensemble
Experts of austere drama, the Sokolow Theatre/Dance Ensemble unites with Wisconsin-based Kanopy Dance to present Divine Mythologies. Featuring a cast of twenty one dancers, this production is a rare undertaking in today’s dance world of small, independent creators. The collaboration includes “Odes,” a 1965 dance by modern dance pioneer Anna Sokolow, and “Ekstasi,” by Kanopy’s Artistic Director and former dancer with the Martha Graham Dance Company, Lisa Thurrell. Two solos balance the group dances: “Transformations,” by Kanopy co-artistic director Robert Cleary, and an excerpt from Sokolow’s “Lyric Suite”.
Though choreographed decades apart, the dances share a common theme of ritual. “Odes” is a luminous vision of humanity inspired by the turbulent world of Greek mythology, set to the music of Edgard Varèse, a progressive French/American composer and acclaimed pioneer of electronic music. Meanwhile “Ekstasi” reveals a celestial journey inspired by the art of St. Peter’s Basilica. Both “Transformations” and “Lyric Suite” explore the inner world of a single soul. Divine Mythologies comes to NYC on April 25 and 26 at 7PM, at MMAC Theater: 48 West 60th Street, New York, NY 10023.
