The Billie Holiday Theatre Presents EVIDENCE of Love and Legacy in Bed-Stuy: 40th Anniversary Celebration Weekend

Company:
The Billie Holiday Theatre
The Billie honors 40 years of Ronald K. Brown’s groundbreaking choreography with a celebratory weekend of performances, conversation, and community movement workshops. Highlights over the course of the weekend include: EVIDENCE’s annual concert at The Billie featuring several of Brown’s signature solos and duets performed by the company members along with special guest artists; a Dance Talk with dance historian Sandra L. Burton, The Journey - 40 Year Evolution of Ron K. Brown & EVIDENCE – a conversation and presentation focused on Ronald K. Brown’s artistic journey as well as the popular Community Dance class for all.
Hailed as a “modern dance savior” by the New York Times, Brown is a "son" of Brooklyn and has remained rooted in his home community of Bedford Stuyvesant. His longstanding partnership with The Billie is a full circle moment for the famed choreographer and, as a young child, he took his earliest dance classes at Restoration. Additionally, more than 40 years ago, he was invited by former Director of the Youth Arts Academy Peggy Alston to make his dance home in the same dance studios of his youth. In 1985, Brown founded EVIDENCE, a dance company dedicated to connecting audiences to the rich history, traditions, and complex stories of African Americans and the African Diaspora.
