AUDIENCE REVIEW: ‘Drop’ by Yiran Shu at Alvin Ailey Theater at Ladies of Hip Hop Festival 2023

Yiran Shu emerged as both lead dancer and choreographer in Drop, presented at the 2023 Ladies of Hip Hop Festival at Alvin Ailey Theater. Created for the Ladies of Hip Hop Ladies Team, the work was a forceful celebration of street-dance culture, channeling the festival’s theme, Make Herstory, through a distinctly theatrical lens.

Inspired in part by the charged battle atmosphere of You Got Served, Drop transformed the stage into a social arena of confrontation, individuality, and collective release. The choreography moved confidently among Hip Hop,  House,  Waacking, and  Breaking, while maintaining Hip Hop groove as its rhythmic center. Shu’s featured passages, particularly during the chorus, immediately commanded attention. Her grounded musicality, sharp dynamic shifts, and assured use of Breaking vocabulary revealed a performer with exceptional control and a deeply embodied understanding of street-dance form.

Shu was equally effective as a choreographer. The ensemble moved between tightly structured group formations and more open, individual expressions with clarity and momentum. She understood how to build tension through restraint and then release it through larger, more expansive movement, giving the piece a strong sense of dramatic architecture rather than simply presenting a sequence of styles.

What distinguished Shu’s performance was the authority with which she inhabited the material. Her years of training in Hip Hop and House were evident not only in technique, but in her relationship to rhythm, weight, groove, and musical phrasing. She did not merely execute the vocabulary; she gave it character, texture, and intention.

Set against saturated burgundy lighting and bright costumes recalling the visual energy of 1990s Hip Hop, Drop carried both immediacy and theatrical polish. Performed before an audience of more than 500, the work demonstrated Shu’s ability to lead a large-scale stage production while preserving the spontaneity and communal energy at the heart of social dance. In Drop, she proved herself to be a commanding performer and an assured choreographic voice with the versatility and presence of a performing artist working at an international level.
